The past few years have been a disaster for live performance, which of course is essential to the playwright’s art. Having started artofdarkpod.com in 2021, a major insight from that is how these artists we cover almost universally take control of their own production. Kubrick got financing from a dentist to make his first film over in California, where he nearly killed his actors. Woolf ran a publishing house with her husband. Burroughs… well Burroughs was insane…
So I’ve been inspired by this to join with some fellow theatre types here in Minnesota to launch our own company. It’s called BAD MOUTH THEATRE COMPANY, and our emphasis will be on contemporary and new plays. We’ve partnered with a great and historical local brewery and wurstery called Waldmann to present a series of free live play readings from March through July, once monthly, both live and online.
Interviews with playwrights and artists will coincide with the digital presentations of the plays, so whether you’re in Minnesota or someplace more sensible, you’ll have cause to go to badmouthtc.com and join the mailing list. In short, we’ve got a lot of free, high quality content coming for those interested in theatre, new writing and the arts.
The reading series is called LIVE & UNLOCKED. The first play, in March, will be my own MODERATION (moderationplay.com) - a very dark comedy about social media content moderators losing their minds at work.
