Look at Actaeon's wretched fate who by the man-eating hounds he had raised, was torn apart, better at hunting than Artemis he had boasted to be, in the meadows.
- Euripedes, The Bacchae
I’ve drafted a new play, my first since MODERATION. One advantage to running your own theatre company is that you can set yourself deadlines that force you to work. That’s what happened in this case - actors booked, one act written, a second act vaguely sketched but not written, and it’s time to work or else the actors won’t have anything to read.
This is good. Deadlines are helpful. Every writer should have serious deadlines. If nobody else imposes them, you should impose them on yourself and stay honest.
THE ANIMALS is my “opioid crisis” play, which I’ve meant to write for many years. It’s a kind of revenge fantasia that moves fast, in two acts and roughly 80 pages. I’ve described it as a combination of DOCTOR DOOLITTLE, FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS and KILLING THEM SOFTLY.
You’ll be able to hear it online soon at badmouthtc.com, and if you’re in Minnesota, here are the details for the forthcoming reading at Waldmann Brewery.
THE ANIMALS
A Theatrical Reading

Waldmann Brewery, St. Paul MN
Featuring Jim Ahrens, Amanda Forstrom, Ian Hathway, and Amber Wood.
“This new and original play is hot off the presses and ready for its first public reading. I’ve intended to write a play about the opioid crisis in America, so-called, for many years and THE ANIMALS does that and more. I’m very excited to share it with the Bad Mouth audience live at Waldmann and online.”

Reservations are free with a $10 minimum at Waldmann. Please tip generously.
